Scientists at the University of South Carolina have found a way to use a cheap T-shirt to store electrical power.
It could pave the way for clothes that are able to charge phones and other devices. Experts predict that new technologies including roll-up smartphones and laptops will be on the market soon. These developments would spur on the need for "flexible energy storage", said the professor behind the project. Xiaodong Li, a professor of mechanical engineering at the university teamed up with post-doctorate researcher Lihong Bao to find a solution. The pair wrote up their findings for the Advanced Materials journal. They used a T-shirt bought from a local discount store, which was soaked in a solution of fluoride, dried and then baked in an oxygen-free environment at high temperature. The fibres in the fabric converted from cellulose to activated carbon during the process, but the material remained flexible. By using small parts of the fabric as an electrode, the researchers showed that the material could be made to act as a capacitor. Capacitors store an electrical charge and are components of nearly every electronic device on the market. By coating the individual fibres of the carbonised fabric with manganese oxide just a nanometre thick, the electrode performance of the fabric was further enhanced. "This created a stable, high-performing supercapacitor," said Prof Li. The hybrid supercapacitors proved resilient - even after thousands of charge-discharge cycles their performance did not diminish more than 5%, the researchers said. "By stacking these supercapacitors up, we should be able to charge portable electronic devices such as cell phones," Prof Li added. "We wear fabric every day. One day our cotton T-shirts could have more functions; for example, a flexible energy storage device that could charge your cell phone or your iPad http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18781878 Last edited by rajan_united : 11th July 2012 at 05:05 AM. |

Shekhar Suman keen to cast Sunny for directorial debut
![]() Actor Shekhar Suman is keen on having Indo-Canadian adult film star Sunny Leone opposite his son Adhyayan in his debut directorial film. Shekhar will be wearing director's hat with 'Heartless' that will feature his son Adhyayan in the lead. And the actor-turned-director hopes to have Sunny in the film. “I think direction is very exciting thing. Like from choosing the script to casting to music to marketing. The film that I am directing is a medical thriller, called 'Heartless'. I am doing this film with Adhyayan and hopefully it will have Sunny Leone. I will be meeting her soon. I hope she becomes part of the film,” Shekhar said. “The role demanded her hence I want to cast her. The role that I have envisaged requires a girl like her. She is a very pretty looking girl,” he said. Earlier, there was a buzz that Giselli Monteiro of 'Love Aaj Kal' fame was to do the film. Sunny, who shot to limelight after being part of reality show, 'Bigg Boss', will be seen in Mahesh Bhatt's 'Jism 2' and Ekta Kapoor's 'Ragini MMS'. Ask him if he is looking to explore the oomph factor of Sunny, Shekhar says, “I am not going towards oomph factor. I like her because she is pretty and exotic looking. Oomph factor will be there but it is not like I have to expose her.” Reportedly, 'Heartless' is a remake of 2007 Hollywood hit 'Awake' and Adhyayan isslated to play Hayden Christensen's part in the adaptation.“The direction plan will hopefully happen this year. I want to start it this year. My script is complete and my casting is in process. I can't reveal the story,” Shekhar said. source http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sh...debut/974381/0 |
