Shauq tha unhe humein thukraane ka,
humara bhi andaaz tha mushkuraane ka isii andaaz ne mere,unhe be-raham bana diya ab andaaz hai unka humara dil jalaane ka. leker khushiyaan meri saari,ulfat ka parindaa chalaa gaya, kya andaaz tha khuda tera,humara dil dukhaane ka. humein hai intzaar teri yaadon ke jaane ka hai kisse intzaar yahaan tere laut aane ka tu hai nahi shayar bande,ghazalien teri hai shauq nahi wajah kuch aur hai tera yun ghazal-e-dard gungunaane ka......

Hi friends, many people are confused in nazm and ghazal..nazm and ghazal, both are the main branch of urdu poetry..
Nazm & ghazal are two different terms.. And thus, i think it's my duty to give the defination of these. Starting from Ghazal 'Ghazal'.. The information i am providing about ghazal is itself taken from Dr. Arshad jamaal's famous book 'aaina-e-ghazal'.. But here,i have to explain it in very short and easy language... _ first of all,let us know what 'ghazal' is? Simply, a ghazal is a collection of minimum 5 sher and maximum 25 sher... Now a new term comes i.e., sher.. Sher is a poem of two lines and a ghazal is necessarily a collection of sher... *Sher of a ghazal follows some basic rules. these are as follows- 1> behr 2> radif 3> kaafiya 4> matla 5> maqta to understand these terms properly,let us take an example of ghalib's ghazal...[i have take only two sher of the ghazal] "koi ummiid bar nahi aati koi surat nazar nahi aati aati thi haal-e-dil pe hasee ab kisi baat par nahi aati.." *the 1st term is beh`r... It is the meter of the sher or length of sher..in ghazal both mishra (lines) of sher must have same beh`r...as you can see in above example.. *Now the next important term is 'radif'... In ghazal,second line of each sher must end with same word.the repeating word is called radif... in above example 'nahi aati' is radif.. *Now let's understand what is kaafia of the ghazal? It is a rhyming pattarn which all words before radif must have... as in above example- "bar,nazar,par" are the kaafiya. *Now the most important term i.e., matla... It is also called mukhada of ghazal.the first sher of the ghazal must have radif (repeating word) in both mishra (lines)... *Now what is maqta? Maqta is last sher of ghazal in which a shayar puts his takhallus in it and talk to himself.. NOTE - _ 1 > in modern poetry,some shayars do not use maqta in their ghazal. _ 2 > in some of the ghalib's ghazal,beh`r is not strictly followed but his work can't be taken lightly. _ 3 > in rare cases,some ghazal do not have radif and are called gair-muraddaf ghazal.. _ 4 > all the sher's in a ghazal should or should not have same thought (but it is not in the case of nazm). _ 5 > ghazal is the most strict form of urdu poetry. _ 6 > nazm has no limit of sher..it can be as long as possible but ghazal can not.. 'Nazm' First of all let us understand what exactly nazm is? Simply, nazm is a part of urdu poetry which is objective type... A nazm may be as long as possible and as short as poet wishes... Some classical forms of urdu poetry may also be included in nazm... The three forms of nazm are given below- _ 1 > masnavi- masnavi is a long narrative poem in rhyming couplets on any theme ; romantic,religious or didactive.. _ 2 > marsiya- this form of nazm is an elegy traditionally meant to commemorate the martyrdom of of hazrat imam hussain and his comrads of karbala fame.. _ 3 > qasida- a panegyric written in praise of a king or a nobleman may be termed as qasida.. *_ in mordern nazm,the two main type of nazm are- 1 > nazm-e-murra 2 > azad nazm *Nazm-e-murra = a urdu poem written in blank or free verse is called nazm-e-murra. it does not follow the tradition of radif and kaafia but sticks to the line of equal length... *Azad nazm = a free verse urdu poem which discards the rythm and in which there is no boundation of equal length in the poem or even in the same stanza...
