'I thought you were out of town' Jayanth asked, trying to change to topic.
'I was' Hemanth replied, 'got back just this morning' 'Why don't you leave that wretched job' Janani intervened, walking into the drawing room, bringing coffee with her. 'Your mother keeps complaining that you're out of town half the time' Hemanth gave his sister-in-law a polite smile, not wanting her to prod further into it. 'Hey, I wanted to ask you a favour' he said to Jayanth picking up his coffee mug. 'Sure' 'I was wondering if i could borrow your car this Saturday' 'Why?' Jayanth asked, a little apprehensive at Hemanth's request. Hemanth immediately became self conscious, and started shifting in his seat. He cleared his throat and took a sip of coffee before he answered meekly. 'I'm going to a temple' 'TEMPLE?!' Jayanth almost spilt his coffee when he heard what Hemanth said. 'You don't even believe in a God!' 'You mean the one you're taking Aparna to?' Janani said casually, and almost immediately bit her tongue. 'I wasn't supposed to know that' she muttered to her self, regretting what she just said. 'Ooh!' Jayanth said condescendingly. 'Alright. You can take my car' 'It's not what you're thinking' Hemanth said, annoyed at the extensive grin festival his brother and bhabi were giving him. 'We're not thinking anything' Jayanth said. 'Are you thinking of anything?' Jayanth asked his wife mockingly, to which she replied by shaking her head to a No, still smiling. 'Where's this temple, might i ask?' Jayanth asked. The temple was situated at about 80 kilometers east of the city. When Hemanth gave him the address, neither of them noticed Janani's face becoming serious for a minute. A few minutes of idle chit-chat later, Hemanth decided to leave. 'How did you know about their trip?' Jayanth asked clearing the empty coffee mugs. 'Aparna had called me the other day... It was her idea actually.' 'He never believed in God' Jayanth said, gazing into emptyness. 'He didn't really get along with girls either, he was always reserved around them' 'How long has this being going on?' he asked, pretty sure that Janani knew about it. 'For a few weeks now, ever since Aparna got transfered here' 'And you never told me?' 'I didn't know it was this serious. I thought she was just flirting with him' 'What do you mean serious?' Jayanth asked quizzically. 'Well, you know how Aparna's parents died in an accident?' Jayanth nodded his head in affirmation. 'Their family were en route a temple when the accident happened. The same temple Hemanth's taking her to, this Saturday' Jayanth's jaw dropped. 'She's never been to that temple ever since' Janani continued. 'You think we need to tell Hemanth's mother about this?' she asked, after a few seconds. 'No. We'll just let him tell her when the time's right' Jayanth replied 'Besides, it might be nothing, right? Maybe we're just speculating...' ***** |
