just signed up and had a bitch of a time, kept getting error messages saying the Human Verification was incorrect. Then I figured that someone doesn't realize that the human hand has 4 fingers and a thumb NOT 5 fingers, after that the process went smoothly. Maybe should change the question to something less ambiguous.

We get hundreds of new members everyday and only you have complained, so I guess it is fine.

Of course, the english names of the 5 have only 4 termed as fingers - no one calls the thumb a thumb finger or big finger, although the others are index finger, middle finger, ring finger and little finger. On the other hand , I see no scope for confusion if the question was - how many toes does a human foot have, even though the issue is essentially the same. Why isn't the big toe given a special name?

Biologically, there is scant difference between thumb and other fingers except that the thumb is opposable. Many other species have opposable digits, but they are still called 3 toed, 4 clawed etc.

Did you know that ours is the original design? Scientists believe that the first vertebrate to walk on land was a pentadactyl tetrapod. There have been many variations since, but we seem to have reverted to that (optimum?) number.
