J.C. Rosales, .. "Numerical Semigroups"
September 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-1-4419-0159-0 | 192 Pages | PDF | 5.77 MB

This monograph is the first devoted exclusively to the development of the theory of numerical semigroups. In this concise, self-contained text, graduate students and researchers will benefit from this broad exposition of the topic.

Key features of "Numerical Semigroups" include:

- Content ranging from the basics to open research problems and the latest advances in the field;
- Exercises at the end of each chapter that expand upon and support the material;
- Emphasis on the computational aspects of the theory; algorithms are presented to provide effective calculations;
- Many examples that illustrate the concepts and algorithms;
- Presentation of various connections between numerical semigroups and number theory, coding theory, algebraic geometry, linear programming, and commutative algebra would be of significant interest to researchers.

"Numerical Semigroups" is accessible to first year graduate students, with only a basic knowledge of algebra required, giving the full background needed for readers not familiar with the topic. Researchers will find the tools presented useful in producing examples and counterexamples in other fields such as algebraic geometry, number theory, and linear programming.

Ršudiger Seydel "Practical Bifurcation and Stability Analysis, Third Edition"
December 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-1-4419-1739-3 | 502 Pages | PDF | 5.84 MB

This book covers the central role that bifurcations play in nonlinear phenomena, explaining mechanisms of how stability is gained or lost. It emphasizes practical and computational methods for analyzing dynamical systems. A wide range of phenomena between equilibrium and chaos is explained and illustrated by examples from science and engineering. The book is a practical guide for performing parameter studies and includes exercises.

Combining an introduction on the textbook level with an exposition of computational methods, this book addresses the mathematical needs of scientists and engineers. It should be of interest to those in a wide variety of disciplines, including physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering, biology, and medicine. Both graduate students (in courses on dynamical systems, stability analysis, differential equations, and chaos) and professionals will be able to use the book equally well. The introduction avoids mathematical formalism, and the only required background is calculus.

In the third edition there is a chapter on applications and extensions of standard ODE approaches, for example, to delay equations, to differential-algebraic equations, and to reaction-diffusion problems. Additional material is inserted, including the topics deterministic risk, pattern formation, and control of chaos, and many further references.

Review of Earlier Edition:

"The outcome is impressive. The book is beautifully written in a style that seeks not only to develop the subject matter but also to expose the thought processes behind the mathematics."
Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society

Paul Springer "Ads to Icons: How Advertising Succeeds in a Multimedia Age"
September 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-0-7494-5647-4 | 369 Pages | PDF | 5.56 MB

The second edition of Ads to Icons examines current and future trends in advertising. Through 50 updated international case studies of new and iconic advertising campaigns, author Paul Springer identifies why they were successful and analyses their contribution to the continued development of advertising.

New digital formats analysed include Google’s AdSense and AdWords, which reworked their search facility as a revenue-generating advertising service. The growing potential of the Internet as an advertising vehicle is illustrated. This updated new edition includes an online campaign entitled Non Stop Fernando, a campaign that exploits the potential of online film. It also features the new Nike+ case study, which details Nike’s third party association with Apple iPod through Nike+ and brought together Apple’s digital know-how and music expertise with Nike’s industry sector experience.

The author shows how traditional media have been revitalised by the adoption of revolutionary approaches to their use, making the resulting adverts more creative and impactful than before. Other campaigns have extended beyond conventional formats, including the first personal SMS text messaging campaign for Cadbury chocolate and Levi’s creation of a brand character, Flat Eric, to drive viral communication before the television commercials aired.

Emmanuel Dubois, .. "The Engineering of Mixed Reality Systems"
Nov 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-1-84882-732-5 | 464 Pages | PDF | 8.41 MB

Mixed reality computer systems aim to fuse digital and physical information and features, either as an augmentation of real-world environments or as a means of providing physically-based interaction with computer-based systems. So – for example – museum displays can be augmented with added information about their history and provenance, and this information delivered to a visitor via their mobile telephone as they pass in front of the display.

An increasing number of systems are exploiting mixed reality but to date there are no systematic methods, techniques or guidelines for the development of such systems. In bringing together contributions on a broad range of mixed reality development issues this book provides a sound theoretical foundation for a disciplined approach to mixed reality engineering.

Divided into three parts, interaction design, software design and implementation, this book brings together state of the art developments in the engineering of mixed reality systems, addressing issues at these three levels. Part 1 covers generic and specific mixed reality design elements and provides an overview of the design method; Part 2 addresses technical solutions for interaction techniques, development tools and a global view of the mixed reality software development process. Finally part 3 contains detailed case studies to highlight the application of mixed reality in a variety of fields including aviation, architecture, emergency management, games, and healthcare.

Multimodal and tangible interaction designers, systems engineers working in augmented reality and ubiquitous systems, human factors researchers, and others interested in the use of mixed reality techniques in their work, will find this book a useful addition to their bookshelf.

Joseph A. Neisendorfer "Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory"
Dec 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-0-5217-6037-9 | 560 Pages | PDF | 5.54 MB

The most modern and thorough treatment of unstable homotopy theory available. The focus is on those methods from algebraic topology which are needed in the presentation of results, proven by Cohen, Moore, and the author, on the exponents of homotopy groups. The author introduces various aspects of unstable homotopy theory, including: homotopy groups with coefficients; localization and completion; the Hopf invariants of Hilton, James, and Toda; Samelson products; homotopy Bockstein spectral sequences; graded Lie algebras; differential homological algebra; and the exponent theorems concerning the homotopy groups of spheres and Moore spaces. This book is suitable for a course in unstable homotopy theory, following a first course in homotopy theory. It is also a valuable reference for both experts and graduate students wishing to enter the field.

Paul McGee "How to Write a CV that Really Works, Fourth edition"
Jul 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-184803-357-3 | 177 Pages | PDF | 5.24 MB

There are not many certainties in life – death and taxes are probably the main ones. Now there is another. At some time, we are alllikely to need a Curriculum Vitae, or CV for short. Whether we’re leaving school or college, wanting a career change, experiencing redundancy or returning from a career break, our ?rst priority is to get a CV written.

Jan Achterbergh, .. "Organizations: Social Systems Conducting Experiments"
September 2009 | English | ISBN-13: 978-3-642-00109-3 | 393 Pages | PDF | 5.81 MB

What are organizations? What is their point? How should one design successful organizations?

Although these questions have been treated by many authors in many different ways, this book offers a new perspective: In a nutshell, the book combines cybernetics, social systems theory and Aristotle’s ethics to describe organizations as "social systems conducting experiments with their survival" and to formulate principles for their design. In part I, the authors argue that ‘experimenting’ and ‘social interaction’ are key features of organizations. In order to survive, organizations continuously have to experiment with goals, infrastructures and transformation processes and this experiment is an inherently social activity.

In Part II principles are given guiding the design of organizational infrastructures.

In Part III Aristotle’s Ethics, cybernetics and social systems theory are instrumental to describe and derive design principles required for social responsibility.
